Shocking Youth Message

We heard this sermon some years ago and heard it again recently.  This was a wonderful sermon and although it took place in 2002, the message still applies today.  In fact, God's Word ALWAYS stays true throughout history, regardless of culture and society.

I think every Christian, especially parents with "teenagers" (we really should treat them as young adults). should listen to this.  What strikes me constantly is this question:  "Do we dress like the world, smell like the world, act like the world, etc….."  There is no such thing as "carnal" Christian.  The Bible instructs us to walk after the Spirit and do not walk after the flesh.  I fail many times but the Lord is merciful and his grace sustains me.

I truly hope all young Christians can benefit from this sermon.  Paul Washer is a very good preacher.  Although he is a Calvanist (which I don't agree with ), his sermon is full of truth.  You can find his sermons from http://sermonaudio.com and http://www.heartcrymissionary.com.

Rabbits – finally

Another family gave us 2 rabbits, one white/black and one pure black.  They are both 2 months old when we took them.  Since then they have been living in a big box in the basement.  Now they are 3 months old we decide to move them outside.  We enclose the rabbit hutch with 6-mil vapour barrier to keep the draft out.  With the mild winter this year, the little rabbits are doing fine so far.

Inside the hutch is also a covered box with straw for extra shelter.
The whole hutch is covered with clear vapor barrier.

Rabbit Hutch – Part 2

Because of the weather and other activities going around the home, we had to build the rabbit hutch bit by bit.  Finally I have nailed down the plywood sheathing and the shingles are ready to go.

Tiffany is nailing the shingles.

She has to use both hands with the hammer.
May be she would fix the roof of the house someday too.

Air Rifle

People would generally think that boys like to play with guns and swords while girls would play with tea sets and dolls.  However, there are always exception.  I first purchased a Red Ryder BB gun.  Then I purchased a better Remington Airmaster 77 (with scope) that can shoot .177 pellets and BB at the same time.  Now they all want to take turn to shoot tin can and sometimes pretend that they are soldiers.

Personally I want to get a powerful rifle that can hunt small game and kill racoons, but then I would need to get a PAL so for now I would settle with the Airmaster 77.

I can't wait until Joshua to grow up and see what he would choose…….gun or doll?

Christmas 2011

Greetings to all in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

What a year full of blessings from God!  The most exciting event was the arrival of Joshua, our 7th child and first boy in the family.  He was born on June 26 and weighed 7 lbs. 9 oz.  It was a relatively smooth labour for Kay and she recovered pretty well.  Joshua has since become the focus of the children.  Everyone enjoys his generous smile.

We also had 2 wonderful trips.  First, we went to Fair Havens in July for 4 nights in their serviced trailer.  This was new for everybody and the children spent some time to select which bed/bunk bed/couch they would like to sleep on.  Kay brought enough food for all meals while we enjoyed the dinner buffet on the last night.  The children had a great time in riding the bike, cruising on canoe and kayak, fishing, playing soccer and basketball, and simply walking around.  We also attended wonderful sermons from Pastor John Mahaffey on Ten Commandments.  Together with some seniors, we waited until the rock-and-roll style music subsided and then entered the sanctuary.  At night time before bed, we had a small camp fire in front of our trailer to end the day.  Everyone wishes that we can come back again next year.

The second trip we had was going to the capital of Canada – Ottawa.  It was a 4 ½ hour drive along Highway 7.  We stayed there for 3 nights at Minto Suite Hotel.  The room was very spacious for our family because it was a 2 bedroom apartment – fully equipped with laundry and kitchen appliances.  There were so many places we wanted to visit in Ottawa, but we had to limit our choices.  Finally, we decided to go to the Parliament Hill, Museum of Nature, Museum of Aviation and Space, Residence of the Governor General and the Byward Market.  The highlight was the “Festival of Light” displayed in front of the Parliament Hill.  It was a spectacular production that transformed the brief history of Canada into a 30 mins light and sound show.  On the last day, we walked along the beautiful Rideau Canal and were already planning that we visit Ottawa again and rent bikes to cruise along the canal.

Derek had a 4 month parental leave from June to October.  During this period, God had given him a new position at the Regional Municipality of York.  It was quite a pleasant surprise to him because he had tried for 4 years to be employed by the public sector.  Although it is a temporary position for 1 year, Derek is still grateful that God has allowed him to work closer to home in a wonderful organization.

Now, you probably have a question in your mind, as we have heard it many times, “So you finally have a son, are you going to stop?”  As we have said before, we really believe that children are blessings from the Lord.  We do not want to limit our family size for whatever reason, be it physical, financial or mental.  We believe God’s plan is the best plan for us.  We believe God is charging us with these children so that we can bring Him godly seeds for the next generation.  Therefore, the answer to this question is: “If God says it is enough, then we are done.  If God says he is going to bless us with more children, then we will accept them with joy and gladness.”

This year, we decided to share our joy with you electronically.  We have prepared a SHORT NATIVITY MOVIE BY OUR CHILDREN   tt that you can watch at this link : https://www.littleapplesofgold.com/christmas .  Feel  free to share this nativity movie with just anyone you wish!

We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  May God bless you abundantly!

 In Christ,

The Chan Family

Singing to Joshua

One of the advantages of having lots of siblings at home is there is always someone interacting with each other.  And children pick up anything, good or bad, from others real quick.  Here Viviana is teaching Melody to sing hymns to Joshua.  Would Joshua become a great hymn singer in the future since he got training at the age of 5 months?  We will see…

Rabbit Hutch

We have a family friend who raises rabbit for meat. I thought I would do something similar for our family and let the children keep some rabbits as pet and meat. So I set out to build a 2-compartment rabbit hutch that can accomodate up to 4 rabbits. All the lumber I used are 2×4 spruce, coated with a non-toxic wood treatment stain. The size for each room is 3x3x2 (WxDxH). The sloped roof is just plywood wuth shingles.

Tiffany is helping me and she would be the primary rabbit carer.

This is the side of hutch.
Using .5 x .5 hardware cloth for fence.
I use joist hanger to attach the rafter to the front post.
I use nail plate to connect the rafter to the rear post.

Harvesting Jerusalem Artichokes

Surely the Jerusalem Artichokes are the tallest plants in our garden, besides sunflower. In fact, they are within the same family.  The tubers taste like potato, but you cannot cook it too long because they would become mushy.  I don't think I would grow this next year because it just takes up too much space given its size.  I would rather grow potatoes.:)

When its leaves turn yellow, it is time to harvest.  Simply pull the whole plant out.

These are the roots or tubers we are going after.

Meat Birds again

We ordered 25 meat birds this year.  However it is not avilable until end of September.  There were some cold nights and rain, so 3 of the baby chicks died.  However, the rest of them are strong and like to catch grasshoppers.  Sonia is my helper this year to bring the water and turn on the electrical fence.

Meat Chicken

Again, we are going to raise some meat birds this year on the pasture. I put 2 extra wheels onto the mobile coop and have decided to use the tractor to pull it across the pasture when it comes to the end of a line, rather than manually tilt it up and push. The daily move is still done by hand. The electric fence is setup and we are waiting for the birds to arrive. Finally today is the day.
