We received the books from Keepers of the Faith

They have many good books that I think are pretty different from the mainstream “kids’ books” in the world today. Some of the books they carry are at least 50 years old (some over 100 years old), when the old-fashion, conservative and true Chrisitan values were upheld. For example, the KOF believes we should avoid books about “talking animals”, i.e. Winnie-the-Pooth, Disney stuff and “fairy-tales”, i.e. Peter-Pan, Cinderalla. Simply because they are not true. As Chrisitans we know that our God is the truth. Jesus said in John 14:6:“I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE.”

While I do not 100% agree on avoiding all “talking animal” books, but I think it is wise to keep it to minimal.

On a side note, we believe being more conservative than liberal is better for our children in the long-run. Many people think that being conservative equals boring and dull. Well, we think that there can be a lot of fun living according to the boundaries that are setup by God. If there are no rules, there will be chaos. Look at the Toronto public school systems. Violence, guns, drugs, sexual abuse and gangsters are spreading to every corner. Chrisitian schools are better but are not exempt. Now the government want to put more police patrol in the schools. Folks, it WILL NOT HELP. Look at the U.S. and you will know how effective these measures are.

The only way, in my opinion, is to bring the Lord and Bible back to school. The teenageers have no fear of the law and authortiy and that is the problem. When the Lord’s Prayer was taken away and praying was banned from school, the crime rate skyrocketed. If a person fears the Lord and know Him, he would respect the law and people around him. No matter how much money the government pump into the system, as long as God is taken out of the picture, it will fail.

Parents, try your best to homeschool your children and fellowship with like-minded families. Stay pure and ask God for wisdom in creating lots of good activites with your kids. Stay away from TV, Hollywood and sensual magazines. Spend time with your kids and spouse rather than in front of a TV. Don’t go fishing alone or with your buddies (once in a while is OK). Wherever you go somewhere, try to bring one of your children with you.

I don’t believe that teenagers have to be rebellious. I have read and seen teenagers that are pure, confident, smart and most important, have good relationship and trust in their parents. I do fear that I will fail in this area, that my kids will jump ship some days. There are so much to do on the farm that I am always exhausted and when things don’t get done, I become grumpy and then my wife suffers. When my wife suffers, my kids suffer. So this year I have learned to relax more. If something can’t be done, so be it. If something goes wrong, I pray first and ask God for help. And I thank God for my wonderful Kay, who keeps us in good health and always supports me on my country dream. I pray that my daughters will become a virtuous woman like my wife some day.

Our cabbage seedlings are gone….

Well, after the day we transplanted the cabbage seedlings, the flea beetles already shot numerous holes in it before I had a chance to put on the floating cover. Then the slug moves in. May be I should wait until the cabbage seedlings are larger before transplanting.
On the other hand, I put row cover on the pok choy seeds but the flea beetles still find a way in. I guess I have to put boards or stakes around the edge of the cover to seal it. However, I think it could be the eggs from last year’s beetles are hatcing in the soil. Sterilizing the soil might be a solution. Hopefully we can still have something left 🙁

Tractor breaks down

I was cutting the grass and the tractor suddenly stopped moving. I checked the engine and it was running fine. I took a look underneath the seat and found out the driving belt was broken. I called up Kubota dealer and was told a new one cost $71. I brought the old belt to Keswick Rental and I got a B84 V-belt for $32 (generic). I disengaged the mower and tried to put the belt one. It was so hard and tight to put the new belt on. Thank God my neighbour Henry saw me and offered help. He is a tool and die professional and is very good on mechanics. Together we fixed the tractor and it was up and running again. What a good experience for me.

We started to plant seeds….

Tiffany planted the carrot seeds and Odelia planted the bunching onion seeds.
I planted some swiss chard and romaine seeds.
We also built 3 teepes for the cucumber. I also build some trellis made by attaching chicken wire on 2 stakes. There are for the sugar snap peas.
Victoria day comes early this year but it gets 4°C at night so we are going to wait for another week to transplant the seedlings.

We received the Blueberry plants and start planting potatoes

We ordered our blueberry plants from Strawberry Tyme. They come in 2-year potted plants, and we have the following varieties: Patriot, Blueray, Jersey and Bonus. I did not do a soil test but I have being covering the site with peat moss and sulphur powder since last fall.

We have also started to plant the organic seed potatoes. First we dig a trench about 5 inches deep and put the sprouted eyes facing up. Then we cover it with a thin layer of soil. When the plants grow for 2 weeks we will hill it with another 3 inches of soil. And with another 3 inches after 2 weeks. We will mulch it with straw to suppress weed. Fresh potatoes tast sooooo good than store bought.

The result of using white tarp is….

excellent! It is excellent for growing weed under cover. The grass and weeds grow so well that they are more than triple the size of weeds on the lawn. So I have proved that using white tarp is a big mistake to smother weed, however, it might help when it comes to grow veggies.
I have to buy some black plastic sheeting (3mil) from Home Depot and will apply them soon. Hopefully this time the sheeting will kill the weed. Well, as least the chickens love the grass and weeds.

We put Tarp on the Garden Bed

Yes, we use WHITE tarp. Don’t think it is better than black plastic. When you live in the country you try to use whatever is on hand rather than going out and buy something new. I have no idea if it is going to kill the weed and smother the grass. As you can see from the photos, Tiffany and Odelia helped me to move the bricks and laid down the tarp. Yes, the girls moved the BRICKS! I used to think, “If only I have 1 son…..” Who said girls can’t do dirty work? Thank the Lord I have my daughters helping me. Always remember to involve your kids in the work, they enjoy hardwork, if you show them the right attitude.

The new hens finally start to lay eggs —–tiny

We found some small eggs laying on the floor a couple of days ago and we know that the new hens are starting to give back. Although the eggs are small, we are still excited. We still have to wait until they learn to lay in the nest box so that I don’t have to hunt for the eggs on the floor.
On a side note, one of the old Bar Rock hen is sick. I don’t know what to do. It walks slowly, doesn’t “hang out” with the other hens, doesn’t eat or drink much. I know I should quarantine it but I don’t have another coop to confine it. I am hoping it will recover by itself.
