Homeschooling Life – Cooking

In our home everybody helps out in preparing a meal everyday.  But we also ask the older girls to prepare the whole meal from beginning to the end.  A team of 2 girls would have to discuss, plan, wash, cut and cook a meal for the whole family (usually at lunchtime).  This is the basic homemaking skills that everybody (especially a girl) should learn.  Sadly, almost no public school nor private school provides this type of training to the students.  Only under the homeschooling environment would a young child be taught these important lifelong skills.  There are the skills that our girls would learn through the simple act of cooking:

  1. Teamwork: who gets to clean and cook what
  2. Planning: what is the menu for the meal?  Is there enough food for everybody?
  3. Following instruction: how to follow the recipe and put the math skills into use when it needs to double or triple the ingredients.
  4. Creativity: when there is no recipe to follow, how to best use the food on hand?  Afterall, why not create your own recipe?
  5. Cleanup:  cooking is fun, but cleanup is also important.

Most of the young girls these days don't even know how to cook for themselves, let alone preparing a nutritious meal for the whole family.  By teaching your children at a young age, you are essentially preparing them to be responsible and caring mothers in the future.

Sonia and Viviana's turn to cook.

Ducks on pasture

The ducks are now on pasture, living in the same mobile coop used by the meat birds.  I enjoy watching them running around the pasture, catching bugs and eating grass.  They would shy away from us if we approach them, but would quickly go back to explore the pasture once we back off.  They are still lousy eater with feeds dropping off the mouth but it is fun to watch them eat and drink with the long beaks.

We do occasionally hear their loud "quacks" in the house.  One thing I would complain against ducks is they made a mess around mud holes.  We have some low spots on the pasture and after rain water would gather in these areas.  The ducks would drink from these spots and made "pot holes".  I would have to fill the holes with soil again in fall.  Ehhh!!

We also snip the flying feathers from the Pekins and Muscovy once they turned 2 months.

Our new addition – Doors

The next step is to install the doors.  I leave this job to the contractors because they have the skillset to do a better job than me.  Sure enough, it takes them on average 2 hours to install a door because of odd closet door size, etc….

We did the painting and trimming however.  Kay picked a very nice brownish colour and it matches the floor wonderfully.

But I never expect that it took so much time to paint the doors and install the trims.  I even bought a new compressor and nailer to speed up the job.  Without the children's help, I don't think I can finish these before I return to work but thankfully, we were able to do it in time!

Baby Ducks

This year we are trying something new: baby ducks.  We ordered Pekin, Muscovy and Rouen.  Personally I would like to try Indian Runners for some duck eggs, the farm store does not carry them.  So I settle for duck meat.

The day old baby ducklings are larger than baby chicks with cute beaks.

They cost more than baby chicks and are quite messy.  Because of their long beaks, water would slip out when they drink and the feed would spread everywhere while they eat, causing much waste.

We are going to keep them for a couple of months and butcher them for meat.  The cost of processing is duck $7 per bird, more than double the $3 charge per chicken.

Starting them in the rabbit hutch because the mobile fence is occupied by white rocks.

Our new addition – Painting

It is now time for painting. This is where the whole family can be involved.  Well, to be exact, the four eldest girls can be involved.

First we painted all walls and ceilings with primer.  It was fun because nothing would go wrong with primer.  But the ceiling proved to be the most tiring part of the project.

Then we applied the painter's tape along the edges.  Finally we started to paint with "real color".  We applied 2 coats for the finish and it took us 2 weeks to finish all the paintings.  Well done girls!

Catch and Kill – wild hare

We spotted hares around the property recently and so we tried to setup traps to catch them.  We put a carrot and some cabbage leaves, hoping for quick catch.  It took about 3 days and we caught a small hare!!  Time for some free meat.

First we laid the tarp on the ground.  Then we put a bullet through its head.  Finally, we cleaned out the internal organs and skinned the hare.  We tried to make rabbit pelt but failed.

Use a sharp knife to cut a 2" hole in the stomach area. We were careful not to pierce any organ at this point.

Pulled the skin away from the hole so we have more room to pull out the organs.

We saved the heart and liver to eat.

The rest of the organs go into waste.

Here is a clearer view of separating the skin from meat.

We soaked the meat in salt water overnight and then bake it.  Yum!

Our New born Son Caleb arrives!!

Kay was admitted into South Lake Hospital on June 1 at 20:00 childbirth unit.  It turned out to be a 11 hours labour during which our midwife Sally had to attend two other deliveries ion the same floor.  By 4:00 a.m. on June 2, the doctor came in and broke Kay's water because there was very little progress and everybody was tired by now.

At 7:20 a.m. Caleb was out of the womb, facing up and looking at dad.  He weighted 7lb 5oz and 19 inches long.

Praise the Lord for his protection over a safe labour.  Needless to say, everybody is excited with the new addition.

Hi, my name is Caleb and I am a couple of days old.

2013 New Garden Season

Because of the new baby and internal renovation work on our addition, I have decided to let Tiffany take charge of a new plot of garden, whereas Odelia would take charge of the existing one.  We have decided to expand the same plot where we grew squash last year.  The total size would be 16' x 20'.  Small but I believe it is better to start small and manage the land well.

We are installing hardware cloth fence around the new garden.  We are going to plant 75 new strawberry plants with weed barrier underneath.  That would take up half of the new garden's space.

We will continue to use wood chips as mulch.  The main difference is the new garden is not a Square Foot Garden, rather it would remain as the traditional row garden.

Digging trench around the new garden so that the fence can be installed 2" below soil level.  This is to prevent any digging pests trying to tunnel into the garden.

Bill C-279 (Bathroom Bill) now moves to Senate! Please Protest!

The Bathroom Bill has now passed 3rd readings and being debated in Senate.  Please visit the following link to learn more about this bill.

http://www.campaignlifecoalition.com/index.php?p=Hot+News&id=121

In a nutshell, it this Bill becomes law, any man who THINKS or FEELS that he is a woman can enter a female washroom without any problems.  Imagine the chaos, horror and possible crimes would take place if this becomes law.  Would you be comfortable if your daughter or yourself are sharing the same washroom with a man?

Any child predator or rapist can abuse this law and safely enter an opposite sex washroom and conduct his/her evil deeds.

Our country's moral standard is rapidly declining.  The difference between MAN and WOMAN is getting blurred at an alarming rate.  As Christians, we have to defend the definition of marriage between one man and one woman.  As Christians, we have to stand up and protest against unjust law.  As Christians we have to love the homosexuals and transgender group, murderers, rapists, thieves, Muslims, etc…… by preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ to them so that they can REPENT of their sins and have eternal life.

We are going to send a letter to each senator who represents Ontario.  We encourage you to do the same.
