My Little Girls

It was a warm sunny Saturday with a light breeze in the middle of May this year. A perfect day for wedding. I woke up all the girls early in the morning and started preparing for the day. It was 7 hours away from the wedding and I already felt like there was not going to have enough time for everything. Breakfast and lunch needed to be cooked, eaten and cleaned up. Four of my daughters aged 3 to 8 needed to be combed, cleaned, and dressed up for the occasion. And there was also my youngest 1-year-old girl needed to be changed, nursed, and entertained. The church was an hour away, and we had to arrive an hour earlier as four of my girls would be the flower girls.

Oh, did anyone say a wedding is not a stressful thing? And I was not even the one getting married!

Before long, the time was here. I was nervous as I was not sure if my girls could do 100% as told during the ceremony. I kept reminding them the details. However, they did not share a bit of my worry at all. Each of them was so excited and happy. And I must say, each of them was so gorgeous, shinning in that pretty little white dress.

They finally made it down the asile. It was so perfect! And the congregations were all delighted by these four angel like sisters! What a great relief!

I sneaked in the sanctuary with my 1-year-old girl to the front row to join my husband. In the middle of the stage stood my sister, and my soon to be brother-in-law. Yes, a whole new family will soon be born. It is the most sacred moment on earth that one can witness besides the birth of a child!

On the wall, childhood pictures of the bride and groom were projected. There was the little me as well. I could not believe I was here with 5 little daughters today. Time could do so many!

Four GirlsThen I looked at my girls in little white dresses, thinking that they would soon be in big white dresses standing in the middle of the stage…….

Things became watery before my eyes…….

Time flies too fast, I can only pray that God will teach me how to “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

For What?

Working hard day after day, night after night, and year after year, for what?

Friends of ours always wonder how we do ever get time for ourselves. And it even seems that we do not think we are busy enough with 6 babies in 8 years. We moved 4 times in these years! Imagine all the house searching, packing and unpacking through the pregnancies and postpartum periods. And yet, it’s not enough. On top of all these, guess what, we gave up processed food 2 years ago! That is, no more pizza that can be ready in 15 minutes, no more store bought salad dressings nor nut butter in the fridge. There won’t be any cookies or crackers without baking. And we won’t have any flour to bake if we do not grind the grains with our hand mill. That’s not all. We moved to this country property 3 years ago, which means more grass to mow, more snow to shovel, more gardening, raising chickens for eggs and meat, splitting firewood for winter…etc. And yes, we homeschool. Sounds fun, eh?

It’s totally by grace and blessings that I have a very loving, understanding, long suffering, and godly husband. He takes care of a great deal of workload outside and inside the house! During the times when I am unable, he can even manage the kitchen and the children, except nursing of course. =)

To be honest, I found myself struggling with the workload sometimes, especially the time when I was battling with Candida Yeast Overgrowth. I felt weak and weary. Duties never ends, chores never ends, children fightings never ends. The To Do List is not a linear list, but overlapping with multiple layers. And the workload is the same day after day, if not getting heavier. Some mothers rush through jobs to earn some ‘Me Time’ for relaxation or socialization. For me, that ‘Me Time’ seemed so far away and impossible that I already dropped the idea of expecting it few years ago. The Bible says “She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. “ (Proverbs 31:27) anyway. However, I did rush through jobs sometimes so that I could start rushing through other jobs. I started to question again the meaning behind all these rushing and routines. A schedule could help with getting things done, but could not answer my depressing question, “For what?” I know my mission is to serve my husband and train up the children as righteous soldiers for expanding God’s kingdom. However, diapering, mess cleaning, and even putting food on the table, do not really sound like anything related to God’s kingdom at all. The idea is so abstract that I could not grab it sometimes. And when I did not see the meaning behind, all the work became harder to get through. I became more irritable and could not enjoy my children at all time. When I looked at my children, I saw work. When I looked at my home, I saw work. When I looked at my husband, I saw my incapability in satisfying him.

Psalm 121:1-2 ”I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.”

I then came before the Lord and seek for help, as I knew I would make every one miserable if I stayed being miserable. Then the Lord answered me,

1 Co 6:19-20 “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

1 Peter 4:16 “Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.”

Yes, it’s just as simple as that! I am a Christian, so just be a Christian! Glorify God by letting people see God in me! Let my husband see God in me always! Let my children see God in me every minute! Therefore, it does not matter whether I am washing dishes or changing diapers, as long as I am glorifying Him I am serving Him! And if my children see God in me, they will less likely be drifted away from faith in the future as they have seen God! It’s really so easy to be too focus on the future and overlook the significance of now. Every NOW moment is what it counts! And how do I let my family see God in me?

John 13:34-35 “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”

John 12:26 “If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.”

Eph 4:1-3 “I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”

Eph 5:1-2 “Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.”

Phi 2:3-5 “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:”

Col 3:12-17 “Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”

Love, servanthood, lowliness of mind, meekness, kindness, longsuffering, forbearing one another, forgiving, peace, offering, sacrifice, thankful, follow Christ……in short, can my family relate to God from what I am going to say and the way I say it? And can they see God on my face and from what I am going to do? Through this perspective, it is much easier for me to reflect on “Am I serving the Lord?” In fact, isn’t this what life is all about? To glorify God and be a witness of God. It is not about how well I cook, how wonderful my children read…etc These things are important, but not the focus! If ever we can do anything right and well, thanks God! And to God be the glory!

Psalms 127:1-2 “Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.”

The last thing I would like to share here is ‘rest’. We all need to rest. We are not machines. However, I am not talking about the rest for selfish purposes, but the genuine rest that our soul and body need. Even the almighty God rests.

Gen 2:2-3 “And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.”

I believe it is not that God needs the rest, but HE is setting an example for us as we need it and HE knows.

Exo 20:8-11 “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.”

Yes, the above is one of the ten commandments. And yes, it is a law in the old testament. You might think that this is only for the Israelites. Well, even if this is true, I believe there is always a reason behind every law, which is for the good of the people. If it is good for the Israelites, that it must be good for us as well.

Isaiah 58:13-14 “If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.”

I was so wrong in the past that I thought I did not have enough time for everything, thus trying to catch up whenever I can on Sundays after church. This made me very stressful since both my mind and body never have a break at all. And when I saw my children, I saw work even on Sundays. I would ask the girls to come over to do a bit schooling here and there, and made everyone feels like it never ends. I believe this was the main reason of developing Candida Yeast Overgrowth last year that I put too much stress upon my shoulder. One would be healthier if one listens to God’s word and understands who build the house.

It has been wonderful since we started to respect the Lord’s days. We can focus on enjoying the blessings from God on that particular day of the week, thus grow our thankful hearts. And my brain can stop asking the questions “What should I do now”, “What’s next” for a day. And since I got the rest and know who’s in control, I do not have the fear to face the new week ahead. I am refreshed every week! During the week, I do not need to feel like ‘it never ends’ anymore, as I know I will have my rest soon!

The Lord is so good!

A Melody of Love

MelodyPraise to the Lord that our Melody was born on Wednesday afternoon, June 3, 2009 at 3:49pm. 7 lbs 3 ozs. Thank you for all your prayers!

Eph 5:19-20 “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;”

Thanks to the Lord that Melody was finally safely born after an hour of hard pushing! I almost couldn’t make it as her face was facing up which made it very difficult. Thanks God for allowing my last ounce of energy just enough to push her out! I was sore all over my body afterwards. The pushing was always the easiest part for me in my last 5 labours, but definitely not this time. Childbirth experience never cease to surprise you! Some say Melody has to put on a show to make herself special. Well, she was really good at it!!!

The following is our beloved hymn that we sang to our little Melody. Click the song name to listen!

In My Heart There Rings a Melody

I have a song that Jesus gave me,
It was sent from heav’n above;
There never was a sweeter melody,
‘Tis a melody of love.

Chorus
In my heart there rings a melody,
There rings a melody with heaven’s harmony;
In my heart there rings a melody,
There rings a melody of love.

I love the Christ who died on Calv’ry,
For he washed my sins away;
He put within my heart a melody,
And I know it’s there to stay.

‘Twill be my endless theme in glory,
With the angels I will sing;
‘Twill be a song with glorious harmony.
When the courts of heaven ring.

Some Maternal Info that You Might Want to Know

The following information are all taken from the book “Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth” by Ina May Gaskin.

Induction of Labor

  • Chemical induced labors will have harsher, stronger and longer contractions.
  • Interfere the flow of oxygen-rich blood through the placenta to the fetus because of the more intense contractions.
  • Higher incidence of fetal distress, thus a cesarean is more likely to take place.
  • Oxytocin and prostaglandin inductions are both known to increase the passage of meconium during labor.
  • Newborn jaundice happens more frequently after inductions.
  • Iatrogenic prematurity (doctor-caused prematurity) is more common now because of the increased rate of nonmedically necessary induction.
  • Increased cases of uterine rupture, amniotic-fluid embolism, postpartum hemorrhage.
  • One of the formulations that used to induce labor is called Cytotec, and it has been linked to dead or brain-damaged babies, profuse bleeding, death of the mothers, etc. Also, ruptured uteri are likely to happen in women who had had previous uterine surgery.
  •

    Episiotomy

  • Can cause pain that lasts for weeks or months, discourage many women from breastfeeding.
  • Easier to become infected.
  • Increase blood loss.
  • Can cause permanent damage to the pelvic-floor muscles.
  •

Clamping of the Umbilical Cord : Early vs. Delayed

  • Early cord clamping means clamping the cord at the first opportunity, which can results in lower hematocrit or hemoglobin values in the newborn. It is also likely to increase cases like retained placenta, postpartum hemorrhage, and respiratory distress in babies.
  • Delayed cord-clamping can allows 20 – 50 % of the baby’s blood volume to flow into the baby.
  •

    Delivery of the Placenta

  • In hospitals, due to time factor, doctors tend to speed up the expulsion of the placenta by pulling on the umbilical cord, which can lead to increase blood loss.
  •

    Single-layer Suturing after Cesarean

  • There is a dramatic increase of placenta percreta (the complication which the placenta grows through the placental wall, even into surrounding organs sometimes, the woman can bleed to death) in US which can be linked to the introduction of single-layer closure, the Misgav-Ladach method, after cesarean of previous labor. Traditionally, double-layer closure is used.
  • In one study, it was found that the risk of uterine rupture of subsequent labor is four times higher with single-layer closure.
  •

    Cesarean Section

  • Women can die from cesarean operations, most maternal deaths are kept secret.
  • Can increase in hemorrhage, hysterectomy
  • Accidental cutting of the bowel can lead to death
  • Accidental cutting of the uterine artery & surgical trauma to bladder and ureters can happen.
  • There is scar pain, and increased chance of postpartum infection
  • Increased pulmonary embolism and anesthesia mishaps.
  • Decreased fertility.
  • Risk to the baby includes accidental fetal laceration, respiratory distress that can lead to neonatal mortality. Also, accidental prematurity happens.
  • Risk of future pregnancies would include bowel obstruction, increased tubal pregnancy, placenta previa , placenta accrete, placental abruption and uterine rupture.
  • Childbirth : To Fear or Not to Fear

Although I am pregnant with my sixth child, I still fear the labor pain. I think about the labor since the day I got my positive pregnancy test result, which is besides having tremendous joy about being pregnant again of course! When I shared this fear with my friends, they often looked at me in disbelief. Their reactions would be, “You have done this a lot of times already, you should have got used to it!” Well, I could not imagine how one can get used to this kind of extraordinary and overwhelming experience. And I am really not sure if one can actually get used to this kind of pain! However, I do remember the joy I had after the baby was born.

To be honest, the joy was not so much about the baby at first. I kept saying, “Thank you Lord, it’s OVER! IT’S OVER! GOD! THANK YOU!!” Such a relief!!! Then, I started to figure out what they were doing with the baby!

I had the last 5 births at the same hospital with the whoever on duty obstetrician. I had different nurses attending my labors each time, and almost all different obstetricians each time too. I found that I could not always had the same support from the nurses during labors as some were supportive and caring while the others were quite withdrawal or lack of experience. Also, they do have to come and go! Once, I had to go to the hospital alone with the ambulance. It was quite scary to be left alone in the birthing room during the intense stage of labor! I remember that I even grabbed the hand of the nurse and begged, “DON’T GO PLEASEEEE!” while she was heading out for the door! However, it turned out to be the easiest and the shortest labor that I had! How amazing that God took care of me with extra blessings when I needed Him the most!!

Several friends shared with me about ,their wonderful experiences with midwives, or even how wonderful a homebirth is. I hesitated at first since I already got so familiar with that hospital and did not want to change that factor. If I see a midwife in my area, I would have to register to another hospital. For homebirth, me and Derek were not quite sure too as we live a good 30 minutes away from the hospital, should we take the risk? Finally, I made up my mind to see a midwife. I concluded that the most important factor for me is actually having a continuous professional and yet personal and caring support during labor. We did consult the midwife for her opinion about homebirth, she said they won’t take the cases where the homes are more than 30 minutes away from the hospital! Therefore, we did not even need to make that decision! =)

You may ask, why not just take the epidural and the fear problem will be solved!? Well, it’s hard to explain. From the bottom of my heart, I always believe that the natural way should be the best. I believe God’s design is full of wisdom and meaning that I should honor it and respect it. Therefore, if the labor process should be painful, there must be a meaning to it, and I should experience it instead of avoiding it! Somehow, I believe it is a spiritual experience as well, an experience to train me and to lift me to another level! Or simply say, to experience God! I did have epidural once, my third labor. That labor went on for over two days, I got so exhausted as it was too painful for me to fall asleep. And I got so scared because I kept thinking back of the pain I had during my first two labors. Therefore, I decided to have epidural, but only to regret it afterwards. Only 30 minutes after the epidural was injected, I was fully dilated and the baby was ready to be born. However, I could not push her out since I could not feel anything! It turned out that the epidural had to be unplugged and we had to wait for another one and a half hour to push the baby out. I felt bad because it was me that Sonia did not born at a time that she meant to be. And what if I got paralyzed and could not take care of my girls anymore just because of my unwillingness to endure just 30 minutes more? I wouldn’t forgive myself for that!

Yes, logically I totally believe that I should aim for a natural birth without any medication. Just that the fear is still there. I have to prepare myself emotionally for the birth. There is a little library with resources of childbirth inside the midwife office, so I started to read books about childbirth. I never read any books about childbirth before! Not even after 5 pregnancies! And I am glad that I have read this one book called “Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth” by Ina May Gaskin.

I cannot say I highly recommend this book as the author is not a Christian, and I do have some reservation for some of her opinions. However, her experiences and professional observations do give me a clearer picture of how to have a more “enjoyable” labor! There are a few things that I would try to remember when I am in labor in a few weeks, and maybe these points can encourage you as well!

    1) Believe in God’s Design and Pray Specifically

Believe that God’s design is beautiful and amazing. Everything that we experience during the labor is working beautifully together for the birth of the baby! The four kinds of hormones released, the contractions of the uterus, the opening of the cervix etc….this is a symphony designed by God! Pray specifically for the opening of the cervix and the vagina. There was a woman who just said that she wanted to open up and let the baby out, then the cervix opened another two centimeters right at that moment! And once there was another woman who just kept thinking “I’m going to get huge” while pushing, her vagina actually enlarged very significantly even before the baby getting there! Therefore, I believe that if we work with God and ask God for the opening of the cervix and the vagina, the result will be even more unbelievable!

    2) Have A Joyful Spirit

It’s interesting that if the woman is tensed or having fear, her pelvic muscles will be tensed too. In some cases, the women’s cervix stop dilating for more than a day at a certain point or even close again! On the other hand, if the woman remains relax and joyful, the cervix will dilate faster and the level of endorphins will rise accordingly. Endorphins are a kind of hormone released during labor that can block the reception of pain and give us a feeling of pleasure. There was once a woman that her cervix kept dilating in a very fast fashion while she was hearing the loving words from her husband! Laughter surely helps too, so some jokes might not be a bad idea!

    3) Keep the Environment Private and Peaceful

If there is an unwelcome or upsetting presence, a labor could be stalled or even reversed. The situation is just like having difficulty to relax and pee when there is a stranger standing beside you. This is most likely the reason why a lot of women found that homebirth experiences are much more pleasant and easier than hospital births.

    4) Have the Right Expectations

If you expect it to be very painful, then it will really get very painful. There are some cultures and countries that the women do not fear the childbirth at all. They do not perceive childbirth as an extraordinarily painful experience, and therefore they do not really need any medication for pain!

    5) Let the Primitive Brain Works

A French physician, Michel Odent, said that the human brain can be distinguished into two parts: the neocortex (the rational part) and the primitive brain. The primitive brain is the part that releases hormones. During labor and birth, several hormones will be released to regulate the process. However, if the neocortex is stimulated, it can actually inhibit the primitive brain to release those hormones properly. Therefore, it is best not to stimulate the laboring woman’s neocortex. How? Do not make her do any rational thinking, avoid making her feel self-conscious, use dim light, avoid strangers…….

    6) Keep Abdominal Breathing Slowly and Deeply

Having deep abdominal breathing by relaxing and contracting the abdominal muscles helps relax the muscles of the body. It is also relaxing to the heart, the nervous system, and even the mind. Moreover, it brings in large amount of oxygen to help the mother and the baby function properly.

    7) Enjoy the rest periods between contractions

Appreciate and enjoy these rest periods! Make a smile! Drink and pee!

    8) Relax the Mouth and Throat

It is interesting that Ina May observed that if the woman can keep her mouth and throat open and relax, so will her cervix and perineal tissues. Therefore, after taking a deep breath, exhale and relax the mouth and throat muscles! It is even better if one can vibrate the chest by making a sound pitched low enough, or even singing a low pitched song! Ina May also observed that, during the most intense stage of labor, a woman’s cervix would relax and open more when she speaks out thankful and loving words!

    9) Massage, Hand pressure, and Muscles Shaking

A lot of women shared the same experience that having their thighs being massaged and their lower backs being pushed against by their supporters can give great relief during labor. If these are not sufficient or if the labor is long and difficult, shaking the large muscles of the woman’s bottom or thighs side to side rhythmically can help too! Some even feel good when being shaken all over the body vigorously by two or three women!

    10) Let the Gravity Do the Work

Changing positions and moving around can greatly help the cervix to dilate. Almost all women in different traditional cultures around the world choose the upright positions in labor. Having something like a rope for the woman to pull on above her head is even better! Also, positions like squatting or kneeling can increase the pelvic diameters.

    Last but not least,
Surrender, Trust the Lord, and Go with the Flow!

This coming labor, I am going to enjoy the hymns that my husband and girls recorded for me, and several symphonies that I love. Also, I am going to have my husband reading to me several passages from the Bible too! For the past labors, I used to meditate Psalm 23 and some other Psalms. It worked pretty well as long as I kept myself meditating! =)

    Pray for me!

    Candida, Diet & Natural Treatments

    What is Candida?

Candida is a short name of Candidiasis, to describe having yeast-Candida Albicans-overgrowth in the body. Candida Albicans is a kind of fungus that lives in all our mucus membranes. Its function is to recognize and destroy harmful bacteria and toxins for us. However, if they get out of control and overgrow in our body, a large number of symptoms, diseases and malfunctions can happen.

Almost any kind of symptoms and diseases can be related to Candida. Some of the examples would be feeling sick all over, cold hand and feet, headache, muscle aches and pain, rheumatoid arthritis, joint pain, kidney & bladder infection, sinus inflammation, respiratory problems, thyroid diseases, digestive problems, allergies or intolerances, Celiac Disease, skin diseases, hair loss, body odour, fatigue, panic attack, insomnia……

In short, the immune system is severely depressed:-
When Candida gets out of control, it starts raising large families called colonies. These colonies can put out 79 different types of toxins into the body and weaken the immune system, thus the results of numerous symptoms and malfunctions. These toxins make all the cells in the body become rigid, which means nutrients and hormones cannot go in the cells freely and neither can waste go out. This does not sound good at all. Moreover, Candida has very long root-like structures that can damage the walls of the intestines causing leaky gut, which leads to poor digestion and mal-absorption of nutrients.

    So, what causes Candida?

Generally speaking, a good healthy immune system can keep Candida in balance with other micro-organisms in the body. However, there are a lot of factors that can contribute to the overgrowth of Candida. Some major ones are overuse of antibiotics (even it’s been years ago), poor nutrition, vaccinations, stress, exposure to toxins, virus, bacteria, yeast, and parasites, stress……….

If you want to find out whether the symptoms that you are having is Candida related, you can try taking Dr William Crook’s Questionnaire, or just go ahead and try the Candida Diet for a few weeks to see if the symptoms disappear. Most laboratory tests cannot really prove that you are having Candidiasis.

    Candida Diet

If you search through books and the internet, you will find that there are many different versions of Candida Diet. In my opinion, go through several of them and try to understand the reasons behind them. Then pick one that fits your personality and life style. A Candida Diet can be real tough and challenging, you need to know what you are doing and stick with it in order to succeed. Researching for lots of Candida diet recipes would help, as you would enjoy a lot of new dishes. In my case, I do need to constantly ask God for strength to resist the temptation of eating th food that I used to love in front of my eyes. A wonderful opportunity for training self-discipline and perseverance indeed!

The basic ideas of all the versions of Candida Diet are the same though: to starve the yeast, to aid digestion, and to build up the immune system.

    1) To Starve the Yeast

In order to starve the yeast, one needs to avoid sugar of any kind. Whether it is refined sugar, natural sugar, fruits, and even some vegetables that are high in sugar, it’s best to avoid them for a month or two. After that, one can try to add those sweet vegetables and fruits back to the diet. However, it’s better to be done gradually one by one and just one kind a week. For refined sugar, i.e. white sugar, brown sugar, molasses etc, one might need to avoid them for years. There’s nothing good in refined sugar anyway, therefore, don’t get too upset about this! By the way, our body sees white sugar and white flour (that includes enriched flour, unbleached flour and even store bought whole wheat flour-which is basically white flour with wheat germs and bran added) as the same thing.

Another thing that feeds the yeast is high carbohydrate foods such as grains, beans and some vegetables like potatoes, yams, carrots, etc. Some suggest to avoid them completely for the first few weeks, and others suggest to eat these food less than 15% of your total intake. So, at least eat them cautiously.

Mold, bacteria, alcohol, caffeine, and yeast also feed the yeast. Therefore, food like dried fruit, hard cheese, mushroom, leftover, walnuts, yeast bread, soya sauce, smoked and processed meats like sausages etc, should be avoided too.

    2) To Aid Digestion

Efficient digestion is very important for Candida sufferers, as if food is not properly digested in time in the intestines, mold and bacteria grow and yeast will then multiply. Also, as Candida sufferers are having leaky gut, food that is not fully digested will also be absorbed into the bloodstream causing a lot of allergic reactions. Therefore, it’s also suggested that during the first few weeks of carrying out the diet, one should also avoid common allergy causing food like gluten, wheat, dairy products, corn, etc, to avoid upsetting our digestive system and immune system. For grains, go for rice, millet, buckwheat, quinoa and amaranth seed. Also, in order to avoid developing new food allergies/intolerances, one should rotate the food eaten every 4 days. That is, if you eat rice on Monday, it’s better to eat it again on Friday!

To aid digestion, one can :-

  • eat less red meat as they need more energy and time to digest.
  • have at least two tablespoons of fermented vegetables like sauerkraut or kimchi with each meal.
  • soak the grains and beans for 24 hours in acidic fluid before cooking.
  • avoid eating store bought roasted nuts and seeds. Instead, buy them raw and soak them in sea salt water for at least 7 hours, then dehydrate them.
  • have good fats with each meal like unsalted butter and coconut oil.
  • avoid over cooking meats.
  • avoid eating more than one kind of meat and grain each meal.
  • eat less dairy products if they are not made from raw milk except unsweetened yogurt with real probiotics, as pasteurized milk basically contains no enzymes to digest the milk protein, thus creating a lot of stress for our digestive system.
  •

    3) To Build Up the Immune System

When our immune system is strengthened, it will be harder for Candida Yeast to get control. Several things to do would be eliminating all processed food and oils, soy products, chemicals, antibiotics, i.e. choosing food that is as fresh and natural as possible. Also, supplement with good quality natural supplements of vitamins, cod liver oil, fish oils, minerals and probiotics. Probiotics are very important, they counteract the growth of Candida yeast, and also aid in recolonization of good intestinal bacteria, thus keeping our digestive system healthy. Moreover, drink GOOD & CLEAN water, and EXERCISE. Last but not least, HAVE JOY!

    Candida Natural Treatments

The diet alone cannot solve the yeast overgrowth problem. One has to also use an effective antifungal. There are antifungal drugs out there to kill the yeast. However, it is wise to see them as last resort. Besides, there are a lot of natural antifungal treatments to choose from. Pick one or two at a time to see if they work for you. Do not overdo with too many different kinds to confuse our body. Some people would first starting the diet for two weeks to starve a good proportion of yeast then adding the antifungal treatments gradually, as it would lessen the die-off symptoms. Die-off symptoms are reaction caused by the rapid killing of candida and other harmful pathogens. When large quantities of pathogens die at the same time, a large amount of toxin will be released into the bloodstream and thus the entire body. This would produce “flu-like” symptoms, making the person feeling very sick and tired. Any symptoms one has before because of Candida will also intensify for awhile. If you choose to do the “killing” gradually, although it takes a longer time, you will experience less dramatic reactions.

Some of the natural antifungal treatments are garlic, coconut oil (caprylic acid), clove oil, cayenne pepper, aloe vera juice, biotin, citrus seed extracts, Pau D’Arco tea……etc.

Thanks the Lord for Healing Me!

For the last 16 months, it was quite an experience for me! I was experiencing this “skin problem” – eczema, and it took me 9 months to figure out that I was actually having Candida Albicans Yeast overgrowth in my body.

It was first just lots of tiny blisters on my palm and extremely dry skin on my thumbs that they always split open with blood coming out. I remember I had to avoid touching water with my hands completely that I had to wear gloves during shower. And my hair also got sticky and started to have lots of dandruff which I had no idea why. I did use herbal poultice to speed up the healing process of those broken blisters and skin. However, those blisters will come right out again after healing. Then I figured there must be something wrong inside my body.

It was a time that I was under great stress as the bug in our house kept circulating among us. For almost two months, I could only slept 2.5 hrs each night on average as the girls took turn vomiting or crying in the middle of the night. Once I myself was off the hook of coughing, I stuffed myself with chocolate as a way to relax. That’s when my skin problem got even much more worse. My arms started to itch, and my neck, legs, etc. Then I started to scratch till bleeding especially during my sleep. Derek and I had to think of ways to prevent me from scratching when sleeping, like tying my hands together, tying my hands to the side of our futon, wearing gloves and secure them with belts….etc..but I could undo all these in the middle of the night and just scratched. Many times I’d have to get out of bed and focus on researching on the internet for hours that the itch could finally subside. As I researched, some websites mention that if bruises appear along with itchy skin like I did, may need to check for thyroid disease. So I asked my doctor, and he just said I was having eczema. Since then, I kept researching on eczema. I changed my diet a bit, I stopped using any soap and shampoo with chemicals, and I kept using herbs that are supposed to be good for eczema. My skin did improve at times. However, I noticed that whenever I ate sweets after church service, my condition would get worse.

It was March last year that I got my first horrible break out on my face which lasted a month. It was large patches of inflammation on my face, around my eyes and mouth, and also thick crusting on those patches. The crusting was so thick that I couldn’t even have facial expressions. It was really weird and scary looking. And yes, it hurt and itched at different stages. I used aloe vera juice to wash my face and apply the herbal salve that I made myself. And I also drank the burdock and dandelion tea every day, which are blood purifier and cleanser that can be used to neutralize and eliminate toxins in our body, good for chronic skin problems. At this point, I still didn’t know the exact cause of the break out. And many areas of my body darken to gray in colour. Even my fingernails were gray. And I was still having bad hair. I tried to avoid eating refined sugar, refined flour and chemicals, i.e. processed food. As I did not really follow a strict diet, my condition fluctuated. However, it was getting better slowly in general.

The second episode of the horrible break out on my face was August last year. I remember I thought I was better, then I ate some white buns, hot dogs, desserts during some summer gatherings. Then that was it. I had to hide at home for several weeks again. I was really frustrated as I had tried everything that I know of and couldn’t keep this kind of break out from happening. Therefore, I kept researching. I started the Elimination Diet, hoping to figure out if I had any food allergies or food intolerances. My skin problem improved in two weeks, but it was not all clear though, like it’s still itchy and I still scratched. That indicates there’re still some other underlying factors as well. Finally, I decided to try the Candida Diet and treatment . I came across Candida Yeast overgrowth in my research earlier, but I did not want to believe that it was my problem as it seems hard to due with. However, at this point I had no choice. Therefore, I began this cruel diet. It was very challenging. At first, I cheated a little from time to time as the diet almost seems impossible. However, as I noticed my symptoms keep disappearing when I was more disciplined, I knew it worths the effort! I didn’t even need to have my hands tied before going to sleep anymore!

As I was A LOT better after being on the diet for almost two months, I thought again that maybe I could eat some sweets! It was apple pie season and I couldn’t resist a piece that I made for the family! A week after, we went to the Maxwell conference and stayed at a bed and breakfast. I couldn’t resist the homemade white toast there…….and so it went my third episode of the horrible break out on my face. I was extremely discouraged at that time. It seems that it only takes a few bites of food to make my condition reverse for a few months. I wanted to give up and just eat whatever was in front of me, no more special planning and preparation for MY meals! But I couldn’t do that….as when I was having a break out, I had to stay home and couldn’t take the girls out for activities for weeks, and I was just pregnant too, how could I put the health of our new baby in jeopardy..…? I cried out to the LORD, but still had no idea of what to do. More details about that period was written in A Battle.

I did need help and encouragement from someone who understands my situation. I needed to talk to someone who knows what I am talking about, not just searching through books and internet. Therefore, the idea of seeing a naturopathic doctor and a chiropractor came up to me and Derek! We did have coverage, so we thought why not give it a try. Then, I had on going visits to both doctors for about 2 months. Most of the things they talked about I already knew, but it was good to have someone to talk to. And I was given some homeopathic remedies as well. My naturopathic doctor even offered me muscle testing and NAET treatments. It is a basically very simple testing (like pushing my hand while having me hold a particular food sample in my hand) to indicate what food I am sensitive/allergic to and a treatment to remove my sensitivity to it! I found out that I was actually sensitive to dairy products, rice, oats, eggs, beans, etc. Therefore, I had to drop those food and red meats as well on top of my Candida Diet! It sounded really crazy as it seemed like I could eat nothing. But I did improve faster once I did that! Also, one particular allergy can be removed in just one or two days with a NAET treatment! So there’s hope! It all sounds so perfect although it seems quite mysterious as well, as I don’t really understand how that works. Me and Derek did have conversation about if all these are related to some evil force, but our eagerness of me being well again in a short time stop us from doing any more research about these kinds of practice, especially that we did not notice any idol worshipping involved. However, we did ask God to show us whether our decision was right or not. The doubt was still in our mind.

Then, we met some new families at the New Year’s Eve gathering, and somehow we talked about healing, alternative medicine, etc. A lady mentioned that she once read a book by a Christian author who did quite an extensive research on alternative medicine. And he found out that a lot of these things are New Age related. Besides, the founder of Homeopathy was actually quite a weird man. This bit of knowledge made us feeling uncomfortable to go on with treatments, but the temptation of being well again ‘instantly’ (i.e. verses waiting for my body to get strong again to overcome the yeast and allergies, that could take months or even years with diet) made me continue with the appointments. At the same time, we did research more about it. But I could only find one article that talks briefly about how alternative medicine does relate to New Age philosophy, so I kind of putting it aside and asked God for more direction.

One week later, we had a Bible study with some other families. A lady there suddenly mentioned about an article that she read recently by David Cloud which explains why alternative medicine are not biblical. At that time, we were like, “Wow, God keeps giving us hints!” We searched that article on internet and it’s much more detailed. Therefore, no more excuse for us to go on with those treatments. We told God that although we still did not fully understand about alternative medicine, but it does appear it’s something that God does not like and I should gave up the idea of depending on ‘them’ to heal me. Rather, I should depend on God Himself alone. One thing that I should point out is that, during the period of receiving treatments, I had nightmares quite often, which I do not usually have. And after I stopped all the treatments, my nightmares are gone! I cannot really say they are related, but it’s how it happened!

Around that time, my condition was improving. After I stopped all my NAET treatments and homeopathy remedies, I even stopped using any natural treatments like taking garlic, herbs and grapefruit seed extract. I was not sure why, maybe I wanted to take a break. Then it was time of my sister’s wedding banquet in the middle of January this year. I tried some food again, even some white sugar. And I told myself I should take the garlic and grapefruit seed extract again to prevent the yeast from growing back. But I did not. I even ate more ‘forbidden’ food the week followed. I guess I lacked the perseverance to ‘endure’ the diet for a real long period. I told God that I knew drugs are not good for us so I searched for alternatives. But then, God also does not like alternative medicine, so what should I do? However, I do know that eating garlic, herbs and grapefruit seed extract should be fine with God, I stopped all those just to pretend I was well already because I did not want to think about this anymore. Stupid me, that led to my 4th episode. All over my face, horrible. This time, I even got a time limit to get well as we had registered for a Mission Conference in Pennsylvania that held in the middle of February. I had only 4 weeks.

A friend suggested that we should trust God can heal me instantly and asked Him for that in faith! Like those miracles in the Gospels! This idea made us into thinking! For a whole year, we asked God to heal me, to give me strength to endure and to have joy over those depressing and frustrating times, but we never thought of asking God to heal me instantly! Didn’t Jesus heal the blinds, the lames, the sick and even raise the dead when the people just asked or even just touched His clothes? I realized that my underlying reason of not asking for a miracle was somehow I thought I did not deserve a miracle. It seems that it would be too good to be true for a person like me to experience a miracle like that. But when I came to think about it, it’s not a matter of deserving or not, but a matter of having faith or not. We started to meditate the following verses and others.

Matthew 9:20-22 “And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.”

Matthew 9:27-29 “And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us. And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord. Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.”

Matthew 21:21-22 “Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done. And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.”

Mark 10:46-52 “And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me…….. And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee. And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus. And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight. And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.”

Mark 16:15-18 “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”

James 5:13-16 “Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”

Therefore, we started to pray and pray differently. We asked God to teach us how to pray and how to have faith. We prayed for a miracle! We asked specifically that God would take away my yeast, my allergies, and heal my face. I also told God that if there is any reason for not healing me, like training my self-discipline, I would accept that as well. But please let me understand the lesson! What happened then? My face did not clear overnight. However, the healing process was speeding up!! Just a few days before the conference, my face was OK enough to meet people again! I am so thankful! Every time I look at the mirror I have to say thanks to the Lord! However, I did not dare to test my allergies yet at that point. The conference trip in the States was a total of 7 days for us. I tried my best to prepare what I could eat to take along with me, but it was impossible to prepare everything that I needed for 7 days. We continued to pray that God would take away my allergies, and would control the yeast in my body.

During the conference, I still avoid to eat sugar and refined wheat products. But I did learn to try beans, rice, oats, tomatoes, red meat, and dairy products with thanksgiving! 1Ti 4:4 – 5 “For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.” Nothing really bad happened! After we returned, I did go back to my strict diet before, to give my body a rest I think. Then after a few weeks, I tried to eat one piece of fruit a week like bananas, pears, and berries. And I WAS OK with those! I didn’t eat any fruit for half a year! Then I tried brown rice, couscous, oats….etc. Wow, till this day, I’m still OK! No flares up! I am so happy and thankful! I believe the Lord is healing me indeed!

To our surprise, we came across a book called “On Alternative Medicine” by Rodney Mast on a booth in the conference. We got it of course. It’s God’s answer to us about our doubts concerning the issue. And we are glad that we stopped involving with them in time. We do not want to do anything that God hates!

I cannot say I’m all well already. Like my hair is still a bit strange and my arms still get a bit dry and a bit itchy at times. But there are no bleeding, no pain, no skin inflammation of any kind. I believe the Lord is healing me! I am still paying attention to what I eat as I do think it’s my own responsibility to eat well to nourish my body. I try not to eat the same food over a few days in a row to trigger allergy, and I still avoid both refined and natural sugar, and also refined wheat products. I just do not want to give any chance to the Candida Yeast to grow at least before the baby is born.

And I will keep on praying, and learning how to pray! The Lord is faithful indeed!

If you have a child under 3 years old

Shoshana (15 mths)If you have a child under 3 years old, especially if you have a large family, this message will be very important to you. It’s a very good reminder from Brother Denny. Please go to the following link for the mp3 file of the sermon. And I do have a summary follows, but I do strongly recommend the mp3 file.

    Summary
Forming the Personality of a Child (especially under 3 years old) by Brother Denny Kenaston of Charity Ministries.

    – Focus on forming the soul of a child. We as parent have a lot to do with that, we don’t just wait and see what kind of child what God has given us.

    – When we have a 3 and under child, we have a piece of soft clay to mold. “That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace” Psalm 144:12, pay attention to “nurture” a plant and “polish” corner stones, meaning active role of parents. It seems that we overlook the foundational stage in the child development because of our fast pace life. The foundation is laid in the first 3 years of a child, they don’t just sleep, eat and play.

    – Do we put our older children in charge of molding the foundation of our little child?
    – Do we read a book or talk on the phone while nursing?
    – Do we argue before our 1 year old because we think they don’t understand?

    Consider the following points:

    1. A child begins to hear at 28 weeks in the womb. They are influenced before they are even born. Therefore, the atmosphere is very important. Talk and sing to the baby, and read to it the Word of God.

    2. Consider a peaceful homebirth.

    3. Nurse your baby. God designs in such a way that when we nurse our baby, we can look at each other. It’s a precious molding time to form the sweet spirit of the baby, not for reading or something else.

    4. At night, don’t put the baby down with a spirit of getting rid of the baby. In the morning, welcome the baby with a sweet spirit.

    5. Work the child into an ordered, peaceful, scheduled life so as to mold security, and peace will prevail in the heart of the child.

    6. Melodious and worshipful music is important to a child. SING to the child.

    7. Provide stimulations.

    8. The child learns reverence for the authority by father’s voice at an early age. Fathers, talk to the babies with sweet words.

    9. A child can learn a lot more than what we think they can.

    11. God’s Word is powerful when read by an upright heart.

    12. A child can be trained to be very social at an early age, trained to be a person who loves to reach out to others, to love others. But it doesn’t mean passing the baby around without your presence.

    13. Read to them as early as possible.

    14. A child can be taught to love to sing at an early age.

    15. A sweet loving atmosphere is very important.

    16. TRAIN THE OLDER CHILDREN TO HELP YOU WITH THE WORK, AND MOTHER MOLDS THE BABY. DO NOT LET THE CHILDREN RAISE THE LITTLE BABY!!!

    17. Don’t raise the baby with a despaired, depressed spirit, as the personality of the child will be greatly damaged. Get help, don’t just sit there and wait.

REMEMBER, it’s not the will of God to train the 9 year old while neglecting the 1 year old!

    GIVE THANKS UNTO THE LORD!!

After learning how to praise our Lord, it’s time to give thanks unto the Lord! These verses are very beautiful. Although this week I am having a terrible break out on my face, these verses comfort me and lead me to a good attitude, a thankful heart, even in my bad and painful times. Again, they are from KJV Bible. Let’s meditate them throughout our days!

1Ch 16:8-12 Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people. Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk ye of all his wondrous works. Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD. Seek the LORD and his strength, seek his face continually. Remember his marvelous works that he hath done, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth.

1Ch 29:11-13 Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all. Both riches and honor come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all. Now therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name.

Psa 30:1-5 I will extol thee, O LORD; for thou hast lifted me up, and hast not made my foes to rejoice over me. O LORD my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me. O LORD, thou hast brought up my soul from the grave: thou hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit. Sing unto the LORD, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness. For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favor is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.

Psa 30:10-12 Hear, O LORD, and have mercy upon me: LORD, be thou my helper. Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness; To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto thee forever.

Psa 100 Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

Psa 105:1-7 O give thanks unto the LORD; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people. Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous works. Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD. Seek the LORD, and his strength: seek his face evermore. Remember his marvelous works that he hath done; his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth; O ye seed of Abraham his servant, ye children of Jacob his chosen. He is the LORD our God: his judgments are in all the earth.

Psa 106:1-3 Praise ye the LORD. O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth forever. Who can utter the mighty acts of the LORD? who can show forth all his praise? Blessed are they that keep judgment, and he that doeth righteousness at all times.

Psa 136:1-3 O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth forever. O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth forever. O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth forever.

1Co 15:55-58 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

Eph 5:19-20 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1Th 5:16-18 Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

Heb 13:15 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.
